KU announces 2007 orientation assistants
LAWRENCE — Twenty University of Kansas students have been chosen as assistants for KU’s New Student Orientation programs this summer.
Four of the students are returning for a second year as orientation assistants: John Babcock, Holton sophomore; Katie Beam, Topeka senior; Emily Hendricks, Overland Park junior; and Arnold Phommavong, Springdale, Ark., junior.
Orientation assistants are hired through a process that includes essay writing, group interaction activities, a five-minute speech and final interview. The assistants prepare for orientation sessions by attending three weeks of training that covers KU academic and student services, public speaking, interaction with the public and diversity issues.
New Student Orientation programs, which are tailored to students’ major fields of study, offer information about KU to first-time freshmen, transfer students and readmitted students. The programs are designed to help students with their academic, social and personal transition to KU and to reduce anxieties about attending college.
The 12 freshman summer orientation programs, all two-day sessions, are scheduled June 11-12, 14-15, 18-19, 21-22 and 28-29 and July 2-3, 5-6, 9-10, 12-13, 16-17, 19-20 and 24-25. One-day summer orientation for transfer students will be June 8 and 27 and July 23, and for readmitted students on June 27 in conjunction with that day’s transfer student orientation. Fall orientation for freshmen will be Aug. 14 (one-day session) and for transfer and readmitted students Aug. 13 and 14.
