KU chancellor issues statement on death of staff member Gary Davis

LAWRENCE — University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway made the following statement today on the death of Gary Lee Davis, an employee of Facilities Operations. Davis, 56, died Wednesday morning on his way to work.

“On behalf of the university community, I want to extend my deepest sympathies to the family of Gary Davis. Gary was a custodian who worked in Smith and Dyche halls, and he will be missed by his co-workers and friends.”

Davis had worked at KU since January 2006. He attended high school and college in Fort Scott and served in the Marine Corps. He is survived by two sons, a daughter, his mother, three brothers and four sisters. Services will be held in Fort Scott.

“Our condolences go out to Gary’s family and friends,” said Doug Riat, director of Facilities Operations. “We are deeply saddened to lose a member of our staff.”
