Tailgating fundraiser hits $25,000 after sixth year

LAWRENCE — More than $25,000 has been raised through the “Proud To Be A Jayhawk” tailgating fundraiser at the University of Kansas since the promotion began in 2002.

Each year, various university groups split $1 from every football program sold at home games. This year, four KU groups will split $4,911, the highest annual amount ever raised. They are:

— KU Math and Science Center, a college preparatory program for low-income/first generation students from Shawnee, Wyandotte and Douglas counties
— Mi Familia Program, which provides information on college preparation and leadership development in English and Spanish to the growing Latino population in Kansas
— International House, a new facility for visiting international scholars
— Commission on the Status of Women, a student organization

“Tailgating has become a popular and fun KU football tradition,” said Jim Marchiony, associate athletics director. “We hope all fans will continue to buy KU football programs and enjoy tailgating on the hill.”

Previous years’ totals:

2002 — $4,573
2003 — $3,352
2004 — $4,883
2005 — $3,670
2006 — $4,495
