University mourns math professor Ralph Byers

LAWRENCE — University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway and Jack Porter, chair of the Department of Mathematics, issued the following statements today regarding the death of Ralph Byers, professor of mathematics.

Byers, 52, had been a faculty member at KU since 1987. He died Saturday, Dec. 15. A private family service will be held later. The family suggests donations to Midland Hospice, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

Chancellor Robert Hemenway:
“It is always difficult to say goodbye to a member of the KU family. Our hearts go out to the family, friends and loved ones of Professor Ralph Byers. On behalf of the entire university community, I offer deepest condolences.”

Jack Porter:
“Ralph Byers was a brilliant researcher. His students will remember him for his teaching and humor in the classroom and for providing an honest answer to any question.”
