University mourns internationally acclaimed AIDS researcher

LAWRENCE — University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway issued the following statement today on the Dec. 24 death of Opendra “Bill” Narayan, a professor and HIV researcher at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. Narayan was chair of microbiology, molecular genetics and immunology at KU.

“Dr. Narayan was a brilliant researcher and professor. His pioneering work on HIV/AIDS brought international acclaim to himself and the university. On behalf of the entire KU community, I offer deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.”

Narayan was the recipient of the 2003 Chancellors Club Research Award. He also was the Marion Merrell Dow distinguished professor at the medical center.

A public visitation is planned from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at the Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee.
