Nancy Kassebaum Baker to give Women’s Leadership Lecture
LAWRENCE — Nancy Kassebaum Baker, former U.S. senator for Kansas, will be the speaker at the 2007 Emily Taylor and Marilyn Stokstad Women’s Leadership Lecture, administered by the Hall Center for the Humanities.
She will lecture on “The Impact of Women’s Leadership: Challenges Ahead” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, at the Dole Institute of Politics on the University of Kansas campus. The event is free and open to the public.
A native of Topeka and daughter of Kansas governor Alfred “Alf” Landon, Kassebaum Baker was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1978. The senator, who served until 1997, was an early proponent of term limits, supported abortion rights and gun control and became chair of the Labor and Human Resources Committee in 1995.
After leaving the Senate, Kassebaum Baker served on the Board of Trustees for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Kaiser Family Foundation. She was chair of the National Advisory Committee on Rural Health to the Secretary of Health and Human Services, the George C. Marshall Foundation and the American-Turkish Council.
The Emily Taylor and Marilyn Stokstad Women’s Leadership Lecture is named for two women who were prominent leaders at KU. The fund they established supports lectures by prominent women on women’s leadership issues. Contributions to the fund can be made through KU Endowment.
