KU unveils rendering of new football facility

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas and Kansas Athletics today released the latest rendering of the Anderson Family Football Complex, which will be built near the southwest corner of Memorial Stadium.

Plans for the building include offices, academic areas, a weight room, locker rooms, an audio-visual room, meeting rooms, a cardio room, a hydro-therapy room, a nutrition area and a display area. Kansas Athletics has named HNTB Architecture of Kansas City, Mo., as the architect of record. Construction will begin this spring and will completed by summer 2008.

Funding for the $31 million project was provided largely through two KU alumni families — former basketball team captain Tom Kivisto and his wife, Julie; and Dana, Sue, Justin and Jean Anderson — as well as several other families, including Charles and Sharon Lynch Kimbell of Hutchinson, Frank Sabatini and family of Topeka and Ken Wagnon of Wichita.

“The entire KU athletics family is indebted to these families and to all those who have donated to this project for their generosity,” Athletics Director Lew Perkins said. “This facility will help Kansas Athletics in a number of ways. It will certainly help KU football compete on a more even plane with other Big 12 programs but also, by consolidating all football activities into one area, the facility will free up space needed for other sports.”

“The new football facility will embrace the hillside southwest of the football stadium in a manner that will not detract from the beauty of campanile hill,” said Warren Corman, university architect. “It will nestle into the hillside where an asphalt parking lot now exists, and the roof over the underground weight room will be covered with natural grass turf.”
