KU program shares information on college preparation with Latino population

LAWRENCE — The Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Multicultural Resource Center at the University of Kansas will host informational sessions for the Mi Familia, Mi Futuro: Dia del Colegio Program in two Kansas cities.

The programs will take place Sunday, March 11, in Garden City and Sunday, April 29, in Kansas City, Kan.

The goal of the program is to provide information in English and Spanish on college preparation and leadership development to the growing Latino population in Kansas. The program addresses issues of social adjustment, higher education preparation and leadership development.

The Mi Familia program has been expanded to include three components. Each component emphasizes college preparation with a particular focus on the Latino culture and families.

The components of the Mi Familia program are:

— Latino Leadership Summit on the KU campus (English)
— Mi Familia information session in Garden City (Spanish)
— Mi Familia information session in Kansas City, Kan. (Spanish)

The Latino Leadership Summit, held on the KU campus Feb. 20, provided information on college preparation and leadership development to Latino high school students from area high schools. More than 170 students from the Kansas City metro area, Lawrence, Topeka and Wichita enrolled in grades nine through 12 were invited to participate.

Goals for the program are to educate the Latino population in Kansas of the importance of college, encourage students to consider KU as a transfer student and answer questions in English and Spanish regarding higher education with a family perspective in mind.
