Kansas Honors Program to recognize 100,000th scholar Feb. 8 in Larned

LAWRENCE — After 36 years in existence, the Kansas Honors Program at the University of Kansas will honor its 100,000th high school student at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Knights of Columbus on Scenic Drive in Larned.

Audrey Allison, a Larned High School senior from Belpre, will be the 100,000th student to become a Kansas Honor Scholar. She will receive a certificate and an American Heritage dictionary in CD-ROM and hardcover versions. Kevin Corbett, president of the KU Alumni Association, will present Allison with a basket of KU goodies and a $50 gift certificate to the KU Bookstores. Allison, the daughter of Kevin and Carrie Allison, plans to attend KU in the fall, where she has been offered a scholarship.

Allison will join 22 high school seniors from Edwards, Pawnee and Stafford counties at a dinner and program in their honor with keynote speaker Joseph Steinmetz, dean of KU’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The students are listed below.

Honored students will be guests of the Alumni Association and KU Endowment; parents and area alumni are welcome to attend at a cost of $12 each. Community volunteers collect reservations, coordinate details and serve as local contacts for the event. John Adams, Larned, will be the site coordinator. Other county coordinators are Michael Best, Larned; Gayle Cornwell, Saint John; and Al Frame, Kinsley.

The Kansas Honors Program recognizes the top 10 percent of all high school seniors throughout the state for their academic achievements. The KU Alumni Association established the program in 1971 to encourage excellence in secondary education in Kansas. Scholars are selected based on academic records provided by high school principals regardless of curricula (weighted or non-weighted), majors, occupational plans or higher-education goals.
