KU to host engineering weekend for girls

LAWRENCE — Registration is now under way for Weekend of Engineering, hosted by the Society of Women Engineers at the University of Kansas. The camp will take place Feb. 17-18.

The event, hosted by KU’s School of Engineering, merges learning with fun and offers high school girls in 10th, 11th and 12th grades a unique opportunity to experience college life.

“This program is a wonderful way for young women to explore what a career in engineering or computer science can offer them,” said Florence Boldridge, director of Diversity Programs engineering school. “The need for more women in these fields is still great. If we can interest more girls to pursue these creative, high-tech fields, then all society stands to benefit.”

The weekend camp consists of a wide array of activities, including presentations by professors and students, a fun engineering project, a KU vs. K-State women’s basketball game at Allen Fieldhouse, bowling at the Jaybowl in the Kansas Union and a tour of the Spencer Museum of Art.

The camp encourages exploration, and members of the KU chapter of the Society of Women Engineers will be on hand to interact with the high school students.

The $75 fee covers meals, lodging, materials, transportation while at KU, all activities and the women’s basketball game ticket. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

To learn more or to register, contact Florence Boldridge at fboldridge@ku.edu or (785) 864-3620, or Lauren Renfro, coordinator of women’s programs, at (785) 864-2936.
