LAWRENCE — Plans for a new dormitory and additional training space at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center near Hutchinson are moving forward.
A recently released architectural rendering by Treanor Architects of Lawrence shows what the center will look like after a $16 million capital improvement project is completed.
Phase I of the project consists of a dorm and a multipurpose facility, which will house classes and provide a meeting space for up to 800 people. The center’s current classrooms seat 78 people, forcing the rental of additional facilities for large gatherings. The dormitory will have 63 two-person rooms, a laundry area, study space, commons area and weapons storage area.
Ed Pavey, director of the training center, a unit of University of Kansas Continuing Education, said the new buildings are needed because the facilities used now have reached their capacity — and then some.
“We’re busting at the seams,” said Pavey. “We train seven out of every 10 law enforcement officers who receive basic training in Kansas, and demand for training continues to be strong. We need to be able to accommodate these demands.”
Groundbreaking for the two new buildings is scheduled for December, said Pavey. Completion of Phase I is scheduled for May 2009. Phase II will begin sometime next year. An emergency vehicle driving training course is set to be built during Phase II.
The University of Kansas is a major comprehensive research and teaching university. University Relations is the central public relations office for KU's Lawrence campus.
