Seven KU students receive Freeman-Asia scholarships for study in Asia

LAWRENCE — Seven University of Kansas students have won national Freeman-ASIA scholarships for study abroad programs in Asia.

The recipients are:

— Libby Ann Allen, Sedan junior, to study this summer in China
— Kim Dieneke Brook, Lawrence senior, to study this summer in South Korea
— Michael Thomas Edmonds, Topeka junior, to study in Japan during the 2007-08 academic year

— Dori Ann White, Merriam junior, to study in Japan for the 2007-08 academic year.

A total of 39 KU students have received the Freeman-ASIA scholarships since the program began in 2000. The goal of the program is to increase the number of American undergraduates studying in East and Southeast Asia.

With the support of the Freeman Foundation, the Institute of International Education administers the Freeman-ASIA scholarships to give more American undergraduate students the means to study in Asia. Freeman-ASIA scholars are expected to share their experiences with their home campuses to encourage study abroad in Asia and to spread greater understanding of Asian people and cultures.

Since it began, the Freeman-ASIA Award Program has supported more than 3,000 undergraduates.

For more information on how to apply for study abroad in Asia and the Freeman-ASIA scholarship, contact Renée Frias, program coordinator in the Office of Study Abroad, at (785) 864-3742.
