Portion of Jayhawk Boulevard to close for construction of new traffic booth

LAWRENCE — A section of Jayhawk Boulevard, the main thoroughfare in the center of the University of Kansas campus, will be closed for several weeks to allow for construction of a traffic booth. The boulevard will be closed to through traffic near its intersection with 14th Street.

The section will be closed starting Wednesday, June 27. Construction is scheduled to end before the fall semester begins in August. The boulevard will be closed to traffic in both directions, with the exception of emergency vehicles. The new traffic booth will be located at the south end of the intersection of Jayhawk Boulevard and 14th Street.

Lilac Lane and 14th Street will remain open during the construction. Signs will be posted ahead of the construction site to divert traffic to Mississippi and 14th streets. Buses will use Mississippi Street as an alternate route.

Current repaving on Mississippi Street will not close that street except on Friday, June 29. Jayhawk Boulevard will be open to through traffic that day, as Mississippi Street will not be able to accommodate rerouted traffic.

The new traffic booth will replace a temporary booth located at the north end of the intersection of Jayhawk Boulevard and 14th Street. The temporary booth was put in place during construction of the Docking Family Gateway at 13th Street and Oread Avenue in 2006.
