KU students help bring a bit of Kansas to German town

KU students studying in Germany this summer sign the city hall book in Eutin, the sister city of Lawrence. LAWRENCE — Fourteen students studying in Germany through the University of Kansas’ Office of Study Abroad recently co-hosted “Kansas Night” in the city of Eutin.

The students are in Germany from May 25 to July 18. As part of their study abroad experience, they visited Eutin, which is Lawrence’s sister city.

Eutin (pronounced Oy-teen) is observing its 750th anniversary this year. The students helped welcome a delegation of 20 Lawrence residents visiting Eutin to observe the anniversary. In all, nearly 200 people attended Kansas Night.

Scott Seeger is director of the Low German Language and Heritage Revitalization Project for KU and the study abroad program in Germany. Regine Kroh, a master’s student at KU, is assistant director of the program.

Those helping with Kansas Night included 11 KU students and Ben Spicer and Jason Dean Criser, both from Kansas State University, and Carl Schubert of Oberlin College in Ohio.

More information about the history of the Eutin-Lawrence sister city program is available online.
