Historical interpreter to speak as Theodore Roosevelt at KU’s Dole Institute

LAWRENCE — A former president of the United States will charge up the hill next month to visit the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas.

Well, it’s actually Ted Zalewski who will portray Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, the 26th president. The event takes place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, at the Dole Institute. It is free and open to the public.

Zalewski's presentation is a combination of history, drama and fun. Largely using Roosevelt's own words, Zalewski illustrates the forces that shaped Roosevelt’s personality and leadership style.

“With Teddy, I thought I could bring all of my interests together and create a marvelous one-man show,” said Zalewski. “I have an interest in history. I have an interest in his life. I have an interest in acting and giving presentations. In order to do a one-man show, you have to have many levels of commitment to sustain it over the years.”

Roosevelt was president from 1901 to 1909. He is most known for leading the Rough Riders charge up San Juan Hill, initiating the construction of the Panama Canal and for his dedication to conservation.

“We are honored to welcome the foremost historical interpreter of Teddy Roosevelt, Mr. Ted Zalewski,” said Bill Lacy, director of the Dole Institute. “He has delivered acclaimed performances all across the country, including the White House and the Reagan, Ford and Hoover presidential libraries. It will be both an educational and fun evening.”
