KU to host two Duke TIP Scholar Weekends in April; tuition aid available

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas is offering need-based financial aid awards to exceptional students in grades eight through 11 for the upcoming Duke University Talent Identification Program Scholar Weekends.

The Scholar Weekends, scheduled for April 14-15 and 28-29, will offer intensive courses taught by KU faculty and graduate instructors. The program will challenge students academically while allowing them to get a taste of university life.

Any Kansas student who has been identified as gifted or talented by local school criteria or has participated in Duke’s Talent Identification Program can attend Scholar Weekends. Student will choose one of the following as a course of study:

— 4.6 Billion Years and Counting: A Primer in Modern Geochronology
— Aerospace Engineering
— Bodies in Motion: Work, Body Image and the Perplexities of Gender
— Globalization and Environmental Problems
— History, Religion and Politics in Middle East
— Medieval Life in Central Europe
— State of Fear? Assessing the Impact of Climate Change
— Visualizing Airflow in and Around Buildings
— When Dick and Jane Compete in the Same Sport, Why is Jane More Likely to Rupture Her Ligament?

The participants will arrive on campus Saturday morning; take part in class work all day Saturday; spend the night in the Lawrence Holiday Inn Express, supervised by resident counselors; and return to campus Sunday for a full class day. The cost for each weekend is $395 with overnight lodging or $345 without lodging.
