KU to host College Carnival for students in Wyandotte County

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas TRIO and GEAR UP programs will host the sixth annual College Carnival from 3-7 p.m. Monday, March 19, at the Kansas City Kansas Community College campus.

Middle and high school students and parents/guardians in Wyandotte County are invited to attend. KU’s federally funded TRIO/GEAR UP programs are designed to work with students who are from disadvantaged environments and help them reach their academic and career dreams.

The carnival uses interactive games such as College Bingo, Career Wheel of Fortune and Financial Aid Jeopardy to educate students and parents about area colleges and college and career planning. The nearly 200 students in attendance last year also received tickets for visiting the games, booths and colleges and redeemed them for prizes.

KU’s TRIO/GEAR UP programs created the College Carnival to further meet the mission of equal opportunity in education. The various programs, serving thousands of students nationwide, provide educational programs, resources and assistance to communities primarily consisting of first-generation college students or students from low-income families.
