Dance Across Lawrence features free classes and workshops

LAWRENCE — The Lied Center at the University of Kansas, in conjunction with the city of Lawrence, the Lawrence Arts Center and the KU Department of Music and Dance, is sponsoring Dance Across Lawrence, a community-wide celebration of dance, on Saturday, March 31.

The day-long event will expose people to different types of movement and promote the art of dance. During the day, there will be free classes, workshops and mini performances across Lawrence. Those who participate in daytime activities will be offered discounted tickets to the ArmitageGone! dance performance at 7:30 p.m. at the Lied Center.

Classes for kids and adults will teach swing, ballet, hip-hop, modern and many other styles of dance.

The Dance and Film Making Workshop will teach a few ways to think about the camera and dance. Participants will explore these ideas and create a short improvisational “dance film” illustrating these ideas. No dance experience necessary.

The Environmental Choreography Workshop will explore movement and dance ideas in a specific outdoor location. Participants will create a series of ways to relate to the environment and express the effect of the location on the movement.

Those who attend the Create-A-Dance Workshop will take a story or an idea, explore movement options, set a structure, pull simple costumes and create a mini performance.

Several mini performances will take place throughout the day across Lawrence, including Baroque and Renaissance dancing. Dancers from KU and the 940 Dance Company will participate.
