KU to honor top high school seniors from 5 north central counties in Logan on April 12

LAWRENCE - Students from 11 Kansas high schools will be honored Thursday, April 12, by the University of Kansas Alumni Association and KU Endowment.

A total of 36 seniors from high schools in Graham, Norton, Osborne, Phillips and Smith counties will be recognized for their academic achievement and named Kansas Honor Scholars at a 6:15 dinner program in the Dane G. Hansen Memorial Plaza Community Room, 110 W. Main St., Logan.

The Kansas Honors Program began in 1971 and honored its 100,000th student this year. Scholars rank in the top 10 percent of their high school senior class and are selected regardless of curricula, majors, occupational plans or higher-education goals. Honorees' names are listed below.

During the ceremony, each student will receive an American Heritage Dictionary, in both hardback and CD versions, presented by Kevin Corbett, president of the KU Alumni Association.

Paul Carttar, special assistant to the chancellor, will speak to the students, their parents and guests.

Honored students will be guests of the Alumni Association and KU Endowment; parents and area alumni are welcome to attend at a cost of $9 each.

Community volunteers collect reservations, coordinate details and serve as local contacts for the event. Polly Bales and Carol Bales, both of Logan, will be the site coordinators as well as county coordinators for Graham and Phillips counties. Other county coordinators are Dave Rankin and Rob Wenzl, both Phillipsburg, for Graham and Phillips counties; Kevin Baughman and Tom Baumann II, both of Norton, for Norton County; Philip Hardman, Osborne, for Osborne County; and Sam Wagner, Harlan, for Smith County.

The Kansas Honors Program is made possible through the KU Endowment and proceeds from the Jayhawk License Plate program.
