Jayhawk Cycling Classic to bring racers, close part of KU campus March 25

LAWRENCE -- Part of the west campus at the University of Kansas will be closed to traffic between 8 a.m. and noon Sunday, March 25, for the 2007 Jayhawk Cycling Classic.

Mark Witt, police captain with KU's Office of Public Safety, said the race would close Constant Drive from 19th to 21st streets and the entire loop of Becker Drive. The roads will open temporarily between the three scheduled heats, but Witt said he could not predict when that would be or for how long.

Organizers expect about 150 collegiate racers from Kansas, Nebraska, Minnesota, North and South Dakota and Iowa.

Sunday's race is one of three events for the cycling club this weekend. On Saturday, cyclists will compete in road race and a 10-mile team time trial. Team member David McLeod said Sunday's fast-lap races are the most entertaining for spectators.
