Pulitzer Prize-winner Edward Humes to speak at Dole Institute
LAWRENCE — The Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas will host the return visit of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Edward Humes at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 28. Humes will discuss the national debate surrounding evolution and intelligent design, which he addresses in his new book, “Monkey Girl: Evolution, Education, Religion and the Battle for America’s Soul.”
The Chicago Tribute’s review of the book says that “Humes may be the most successful so far in making a complicated issue accessible and in putting human faces on both sides of the evolution divide.”
Humes appeared at the Dole Institute in November as part of the institute’s Veterans Day tribute. He discussed the impact of the G.I. Bill and his book “Over Here: How the G.I. Bill Transformed the American Dream.”
Dole Institute Director Bill Lacy said Humes was an exceptionally popular speaker last semester.
“He is one of this country’s premier journalists, and he was incredibly informative, timely, eloquent and, quite frankly, entertaining,” Lacy said. “The subject of his new book, ‘Monkey Girl,’ is guaranteed to rouse interest, especially in Kansas.”
A journalist and author of eight works of nonfiction, Humes received the Pulitzer Prize for his newspaper coverage of the military and a PEN Center USA Award for his groundbreaking book about the children of juvenile court, “No Matter How Loud I Shout.” His other books include “School of Dreams,” “Baby E.R.,” “Mean Justice” (a Los Angeles Times Best Book of 1999) and the bestseller “Mississippi Mud.” He has written for numerous magazines and newspapers and is now a writer-at-large for Los Angeles magazine.
The program is free and open to the pubic. It will be simulcast at KU’s Edwards Campus in Overland Park. For more information, visit the Dole Institute Web site or call (785) 864-4900.
