KU students, faculty join production of ‘Antigone’ at Lawrence Arts Center
LAWRENCE — The English Alternative Theatre at the University of Kansas will give four performances of “Antigone,” the classic Greek drama by Sophocles, at 8 p.m. April 5, 6 and 7 and at 2:30 p.m. April 8 at the Lawrence Arts Center.
The production of the play about a king who chooses to enforce the strict letter of the law rather than the more compassionate spirit of the law uses an adaptation by Bertolt Brecht, translated by Judith Malina, then reconceived and directed by Paul Stephen Lim, a Chancellors Club Teaching Professor in English and founder and artistic director of EAT.
The cast of 16 is made up of KU faculty and students and alumni who are Lawrence residents. John Younger, KU professor of classics, plays Kreon, the Theban king who comes to grief when he ignores the advice of everyone around him after he has gone to war against Argos, a country rich in iron ore.
Kreon’s main adversary in the play is Antigone, who is betrothed to his son Hamon. Antigone is played by Samantha Raines of Lawrence, who received a bachelor’s degree in theatre and film from KU in summer 2005. Ryan Klamen, Chesterfield, Mo., sophomore, plays Hamon. Karl Ramberg, a KU alumnus, has the role of male representation of the blind seer Teiresias.
Other KU students featured in “Antigone” are Mackenzie Wiglesworth as Ismene, Antigone’s sister; Jordan White as the female Teiresias; Dana Dajani, R. Troy Hirsch and Jakob Wozniak as the three traditional chorus members; Colin Elliott, Chris McGillivray and Jacqueline Grunau as the three guards and messengers; and Catie Provost, Megan Smith, Sean Hall and Adi Govindarajan as the four standard bearers.
Designers for “Antigone,” all Lawrence residents, are Lee Saylor for set and lights, Ione Unruh for costumes, Ramberg for original artwork and music, Jerel Hilding for choreography and Nick Mosher, a KU senior in theatre, for sound design. Jeremy Auman of Lawrence is the assistant director, and Chris Nelson, Lawrence master’s degree student in creative writing, is the stage manager.
Tickets are available at the box office of the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St., or by calling (785) 843-2787. Tickets are $10 for the public, $6 for students and $8 for senior citizens.
