Documentary that follows life cycle of Mardi Gras beads to be shown at KU

LAWRENCE — Award-winning director and sociologist David Redmon will speak at the University of Kansas in conjunction with a free screening of his film “Mardi Gras: Made in China.”

The event begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at Alderson Auditorium in the Kansas Union.

The film follows the path of Mardi Gras beads from their production in Fuzhou, China, to their eventual disposal in New Orleans, La. The film analyzes the human effects of globalization and has earned 18 international film awards, including a Grand Jury Prize nomination for best documentary at the Sundance Film Festival. Redmon has a doctorate in visual sociology from the State University of New York.

Redmon’s talk is part of the Visualizing Globalization Through Film series, sponsored by the Center for East Asian Studies; Department of Theatre and Film; Kansas Consortium for Teaching About Asia; departments of African and African-American studies, East Asian languages and cultures, French and Italian, Germanic languages and literatures and Spanish and Portuguese; Hall Center for the Humanities; Institute for Policy and Social Research; and the centers for Russian, East European and Eurasian studies, African studies, European studies and Latin American studies.
