Scott Weiss named director of bands at KU

LAWRENCE — Scott A. Weiss will join the University of Kansas as director of bands this fall.

Weiss is the associate director of bands and associate professor of music at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, where he also earned his bachelor’s degree. He received master’s and doctoral degrees at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Before working at Indiana University, Weiss was director of bands and an associate professor of music at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. He also founded, directed and conducted the Beaumont Youth Wind Symphony, comprised of high school wind and percussion students. Weiss was a doctoral conducting intern at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; director of bands at Harrison High School in Kennesaw, Ga.; assistant director of instrumental music and adjunct instructor at Emory University in Atlanta; and director of upper school bands at the Potomac School in McLean, Va.

Weiss has been invited to perform at notable clinics, festivals and universities. He received the University Merit Award at Lamar University, the Distinguished Band Director Award from the American School Band Directors Association/United Musical Instruments and the National Band Association’s Citation of Excellence in 1998 and 1999.

Weiss’ professional affiliations include memberships in the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, the International Society for the Investigation and Promotion of Wind Music, the National Band Association, the Conductors Guild, the College Band Directors National Association and the Music Educators National Conference.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Weiss as the new KU director of bands,” said Larry Mallett, chair of the Department of Music and Dance. “He brings outstanding academic credentials and exceptional professional experience to the University of Kansas, and his hiring is another indication of the national and international reputation the KU band program has.”
