KU economics department announces 2007 award winners

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas Department of Economics honored 25 students with awards and scholarships totaling more than $30,000 at its annual awards banquet this spring.

Faculty members from the economics department presented the awards at a May 1 banquet in the Adams Alumni Center.

Award winners are announced in the spring. Scholarship recipients’ names will be announced in the fall 2007 semester. Funds for the awards and scholarships are administered through KU Endowment.

The John Ise, Domenico Gagliardo, R.S. Howey and Arthur J. Boynton memorial awards are given annually to students for outstanding work in economics.

The John Ise Awards are funded from sales of Ise’s book, “The American Way,” a collection of his speeches. A committee from the economics department and the KU School of Business published and distributed the book.

The Domenico Gagliardo Award was established after the death of Gagliardo, a longtime department member.

The R.S. Howey Award, established upon the retirement of Howey, professor emeritus, recognizes outstanding students majoring in economics.

Friends, former students and associates established the Arthur J. Boynton Memorial Award after the death of Boynton, a longtime member of the economics department. When his wife, Flora Boynton, died in 1978, most of her estate was added to the fund. The Boynton award endowment gives awards to outstanding seniors and scholarships to sophomores and juniors.
