Dole Institute to host Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi

Nancy Pelosi

UPDATE 11/8/07 — This event has been indefinitely postponed.

LAWRENCE — Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, will speak at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas.

“Nancy Pelosi made history when she became the first woman speaker of the house,” said Jonathan Earle, interim director of the Dole Institute. “It is a privilege and an honor to have her visit the Dole Institute.”

Pelosi’s visit to KU is co-sponsored by the College Democrats of Kansas and is free and open to the public. The Dole Institute will be closed until 10 a.m. the day of the event.

Pelosi was elected speaker of the house Jan. 4. Between 2002 and 2007 she was house minority leader. As speaker of the house, Pelosi is second in line to the presidency.

She has represented California’s Eighth District, which includes most of San Francisco, in the House of Representatives since 1987.

Upon installation as speaker of the house, Pelosi enacted the 100-hour plan, part of her party’s strategy in the 2006 midterm elections to show that Democrats would pass the legislation they promised. Legislation passed included increasing the federal minimum wage, increased restrictions on lobbyists, cutting interest rates on student loans and enacting all recommendations of the 9/11 Commission.
