KU Libraries adds architectural images to collection
LAWRENCE — Thousands of architectural images are now available to all University of Kansas faculty, staff and students, thanks to a partnership between KU Scholar Services and the School of Architecture and Urban Planning.
The high-resolution images are available for teaching and research purposes from the KU Libraries’ Image Gateway. Previously, the images were only available to those at the architecture school.
The collection includes 22,000 digitized images purchased from Archivision Inc., an educational resource for images of architecture, urban design, parks and public art. The School of Architecture and Urban Planning will add 30,000 images to the collection in the future.
“These images are being made available to a much broader audience, which will play a critical role in future research and teaching efforts,” said Dan Rolf, director of the Architectural Resource Center.
This project is just one example of the way in which Scholar Services works with campus partners to make information more accessible, said Holly Mercer, interim coordinator for Scholar Services.
“The Image Gateway allows us to provide access to thousands of high-quality digital images from a variety of sources including proprietary KU collections,” she said. “We’ve also licensed other image collections from commercial sources and included high-quality publicly available collections.”
The architectural images also are available in the Art and Cultural Heritage Collection on Image Gateway, which contains more than 90,000 historical and cultural images, including art objects, architectural images, historical documents and photographs, and archaeological specimens.
KU Scholar Services, a joint program of KU Libraries and Information Technology, collaborates with researchers, academic departments, research centers and external entities to develop and deliver electronic information in support of the university’s mission of research, teaching and service.
The University of Kansas is a major comprehensive research and teaching university. University Relations is the central public relations office for KU's Lawrence campus.
