Dole Institute to host commanding general of Fort Leavenworth
LAWRENCE — Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV, commanding general of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas.
Caldwell’s presentation, “The Changing Face of Warfare in the 21st Century,” is co-sponsored by the KU-Fort Leavenworth Program and is free and open to the public.
“The general earned a reputation for straight talk and keen insight while spokesman in Iraq,” said Jonathan Earle, interim director of the Dole Institute. “Now responsible for educating the next generation of Army leaders, his visit promises to be a compelling evening.”
As commanding general of the Combined Arms Center, Caldwell oversees the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth and 17 other schools and training centers throughout the country. The Combined Arms Center is responsible for development of the Army’s doctrinal manuals, officer training and integration of battle command systems and concepts.
Previously, Caldwell was deputy chief of staff for strategic effects and spokesperson for the Multi-National Force in Iraq, where he was responsible for developing an integrated communications strategy for operations. He also has served as commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division and senior military assistant to the deputy secretary of defense.
Caldwell graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1976. He holds master’s degrees from the United States Naval Postgraduate School and the School for Advanced Military Studies at the United States Army Command and General Staff College. Caldwell attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University as a Senior Service College Fellow and has served as a White House fellow.
