KU Crime Stoppers announces $1,000 reward in Lewis Hall incidents
LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas Crime Stoppers Board is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for shooting windows recently at the Ekdahl Dining Commons, commonly known as Mrs. E's.
A window at Mrs. E's was damaged by a gunshot sometime between 9:30 p.m. Nov. 3 and 11:30 a.m. Nov. 4. This is the second such incident this semester at Lewis Hall, which adjoins the dining hall. Between 5:30 p.m. Oct. 13 and 10:30 a.m. Oct. 14, an unknown person discharged a firearm into three windows at Lewis Hall. Two windows were on the east side, in Mrs. E's, and one window was in the third-floor lobby on the west side.
“We are taking these incidents very seriously,” said KU Chief of Police Ralph Oliver. “This is a matter of public safety. We're grateful no one has been hurt, but we need to find the person or persons responsible.”
The KU Crime Stoppers Board pre-designates reward amounts only in extremely serious incidents regarding public safety.
Anyone with information that might assist the investigation is urged to call the 24-hour KU Crime Stoppers phone line at (785) 864-8888.
No weapons are allowed on the KU campus. Students and the rest of the KU community are asked to call 911 if they see anyone with a weapon. Any suspicious activity or sounds that seem to be gunshots should be reported to KU Public Safety, (785) 864-5900.
Crime Stoppers is a nationwide program that operates within local communities. The goal is to use the combined resources of citizens, media and law enforcement to bring perpetrators of crimes into the criminal justice system. KU's program was established in 1990. It gives citizens an opportunity to anonymously provide police with information about criminal activity.
The University of Kansas is a major comprehensive research and teaching university. University Relations is the central public relations office for KU's Lawrence campus.
