Nancy Pelosi postpones visit to KU’s Dole Institute
LAWRENCE — Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, has postponed her Friday, Nov. 9, scheduled lecture at the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas.
Pelosi’s staff notified Dole Institute officials Thursday that because the house is in session all day Friday, Pelosi has to remain in Washington, D.C. Barbara Ballard, associate director of the Dole Institute, said Pelosi’s staff said she hopes to reschedule her visit as soon as possible.
Pelosi made history when in January she became the first woman to serve as speaker of the house. As speaker of the house, Pelosi is second in line to the presidency.
Between 2002 and 2007, Pelosi was house minority leader. She has represented California’s Eighth District, which includes most of San Francisco, in the House of Representatives since 1987.
Upon installation as speaker of the house, Pelosi enacted the 100-hour plan, part of her party’s strategy in the 2006 midterm elections to show that Democrats would pass the legislation they promised. Legislation passed included increasing the federal minimum wage, increased restrictions on lobbyists, cutting interest rates on student loans and enacting all recommendations of the 9/11 Commission.
Pelosi’s visit to KU was co-sponsored by the College Democrats of Kansas.
The University of Kansas is a major comprehensive research and teaching university. University Relations is the central public relations office for KU's Lawrence campus.
