KU to celebrate Energy Awareness Week

LAWRENCE — Student organizations and academic departments at the University of Kansas are teaming up to host Energy Awareness Week, Nov. 12-16.

Activities will address how individuals can combat wasteful energy use and make practical consumption a part of everyday life.

Energy Awareness Week activities include:

Monday, Nov. 12
10 a.m.-2 p.m., Wescoe Beach — Roll Out the Reusable Bags: Students can pick up reusable shopping bags that offer discounts at local businesses.

6:30 p.m., Hawks Nest, Kansas Union — Alternative Energy Society will train volunteers for the Biodiesel Lab, an innovative project that is converting used vegetable oil into biodiesel fuel.

Tuesday, Nov. 13
10 a.m.-2 p.m., Wescoe Beach — Bowling for Smokestacks: Join KU Environs for a round of bowling and learn more about the importance of reducing energy demand.

6:30 p.m., Hawks Nest, Kansas Union — Film screening: KU Environs will show the documentary “Kilowatt Ours,” which examines the negative impacts the current energy paradigm has on health, the environment and pocketbooks.

Wednesday, Nov. 14
All day — Members of the KU community are encouraged to ride bikes to campus.

10 a.m.-2 p.m., Wescoe Beach — Ride a Bike to School Day: Local artisans will showcase their works along Jayhawk Boulevard. Critical Mass and other organizations will be on hand to provide information about bicycle safety, the benefits of biking and opportunities for riding in and around Lawrence.

6:30 p.m., Hawks Nest, Kansas Union — This Is Not Our Parents’ Environmentalism: What is ‘Being Green’ in 2007? Local business owners, graduate students studying issues of sustainability and KU staff will be featured in this campuswide round table discussion. The conversation will continue at Ecumenical Christian Ministries with food provided by Local Burger.

Thursday, Nov. 15
9 a.m.-4 p.m., Memorial Stadium — KU Recycling will offer drop-off recycling services for students, faculty and staff on the east side of Memorial Stadium in parking lot 94.

10 a.m.-2 p.m., Wescoe Beach and 1-4 p.m., Kansas Union — America Recycles Day: The Environmental Stewardship Program and E.A.R.T.H. will provide information on recycling and waste reduction.

Friday, Nov. 16
10 a.m.-2 p.m., Wescoe Beach — Alternative Energy Society Chicken Fry: KU Dining Services and the KU Biodiesel Initiative are teaming up to find the best vegetable oil to reuse for biodiesel. They’ll be frying up some food to share, so stop by for a sample and find out more about their programs.

9 a.m.-4 p.m., Student Recreation Fitness Center — KU Recycling will offer drop-off recycling services for students, faculty and staff on the south side of the Student Recreation Fitness Center.

Organizations sponsoring activities: 2020 Vision, Alternative Energy Society, Center for Sustainability, Critical Mass, Delta Force, E.A.R.T.H., Ecumenical Christian Ministries, Emerging Green Builders, Engineers Without Borders, Environmental Stewardship Program, KU Environs, Net Impact and Sierra Club.
