KU plans variety of activities in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas is once again celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.

Some of this year’s events include the annual Hispanic Heritage Month banquet featuring keynote speaker Jimmy Cabrera of San Antonio, Texas; presentations on the “Latino Pathway to Higher Education;” Latin cuisine night; and outings to a KU women’s soccer game and a Kansas City Wizards game.

The theme for this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month is “Celebrating Our Past, Our Future, Our Legacy!” or in Spanish, “Celebrando Nuestro Pasado, Nuestro Futuro, Nuestro Legado!”

Events are sponsored by the Centro Hispano Resource Center, Delta Alpha chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority Inc., First Nations Student Association, Hispanic American Leadership Organization, KU Latino Council, Mu Beta chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc., Multicultural Resource Center and Office of Multicultural Affairs.

Stop by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, 145 Strong Hall, or the Multicultural Resource Center, 1530 Summerfield Drive, to pick up a copy of this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month poster.

Sept. 15 — Tailgate with Latino Council before the KU vs. Toledo football game, 3-6 p.m., Hawks Nest Patio, Kansas Union

Sept. 17 — Salsa 101, dance lessons from Casa de Fitness instructors, 7 p.m., Kansas Room, Kansas Union, free

Sept. 18 — Latin American Cuisine Night, 7:30 p.m., Multicultural Resource Center, free food and recipes

Sept. 19 — Informational meeting about Latina sorority Sigma Lambda Gamma, 7 p.m. Alcove C, Kansas Union, sponsored by the Delta Alpha chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma

Sept. 20 — “The Latino Pathway to Higher Education,” 1-2 p.m., Multicultural Resource Center classroom; join members of the Latino Council as they share their experiences of being Latinos in higher education; refreshments provided

Cultural Recess, 7 p.m., Hawks Nest, Kansas Union; learn about other cultures by participating in games from all over the world; free, refreshments provided

Sept. 21 — Service project, 6 a.m., Jubilee Cafe, First United Methodist Church, 946 Vermont St.; join the members of HALO, the Delta Alpha chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma and the Mu Beta chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta in working to prevent hunger in Lawrence; call Chris Munoz, (785) 221-6413, for transportation

Feria Hispana: A Celebration of Latin American Cultures, 2-6 p.m., South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St.; enjoy food, music and folkloric dances from more than 14 Latin American countries; information available in Spanish and English about Lawrence community resources; co-sponsored with Latino Community Coalition and Roger Hill Volunteer Center

Sept. 25 — Latin Night of Comedy with clips from the Latin Kings of Comedy and the Latin Divas of Comedy, 7 p.m., Multicultural Resource Center classroom, refreshments provided
