KU offering business cards to students

LAWRENCE — To help students network for summer internships or a first job after graduation, the University of Kansas is now offering student business cards featuring either the university’s official logo or Jayhawk mascot.

“Many jobs in today’s market are hidden, not advertised, and attained through networking. The business card is an important networking tool,” said David Gaston, director of the University Career Center. “A KU business card will give our students an edge. They will have the ability to demonstrate immediately their affiliation with KU and employers will notice.”

In addition to the KU trademarks, a student can add information about his or her major, expected graduation date and contact information. The cards will be of the same quality as those used by KU employees.

“Most students don’t have business cards, so this card will set KU students apart,” said Jordan Bates, a junior from Hoisington and a peer career assistant at UCC. “Anything you have that distinguishes you and helps employers remember you is an advantage.”

Bates noted that at career fairs, some employers cannot accept resumes because of how their application processes are designed, but they can accept business cards.

Cards are available in quantities of 250 or more starting at $10.96 for the KU logo and $17.60 for the Jayhawk edition. The cards are sold at cost. The student business card project was initiated by the Office of University Communications in coordination with UCC.

To order, visit the UCC’s business card Web site, www.ucc.ku.edu/bcards.

The UCC Web site, which will be listed on the business cards, offers KU Career Connections, an Internet-based program through which KU students and alumni can post their resumes for employers to view. KU Career Connections is available to current students and alumni through their respective career services offices.

In addition to resume posting, KU Career Connections includes a searchable database of full-time, part-time, limited term, internship and volunteer position announcements sent to KU. Employers from across the country and the world post announcements. Students also can sign up for on-campus interviews.

The University Career Center helps students write resumes, develop interviewing and networking skills, explore career opportunities and develop job search strategies. The center also promotes KU students to potential employers and recruits businesses to visit campus to interview students.
