Chair of FDIC to give 2007 Anderson Chandler Lecture at KU
Sheila Bair
LAWRENCE — Sheila Bair, chair of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and a University of Kansas alumna, will present the School of Business’ fall 2007 Anderson Chandler Lecture at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at the Lied Center.
Bair will address timely financial topics including sub-prime mortgages, pay-day loans and the financial literacy of saving, spending and not wasting money. The lecture is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.
The School of Business will also host Bair at a round-table discussion with area bankers and in classroom sessions with small groups of business students.
Bair is a native of Independence, Kan., and earned a bachelor's in philosophy in 1975 and a law degree in 1978, both from KU. She was sworn in as chair of the FDIC in June 2006, having previously served on the organization’s Advisory Committee on Banking Policy. During that time, she also served on the faculty for the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Before that, Bair held numerous positions, including assistant secretary for financial institutions at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, senior vice president for government relations of the NYSE Stock Exchange and counsel to former U.S. Sen. Robert Dole, R-Kan.
In late 2006, Bair was named to SmartMoney magazine’s “Power 30” list of the 30 most influential people in investing.
Bair is the 11th speaker in the Anderson Chandler Lecture Series, which began in 1997. The lecture series is made possible by Anderson Chandler, an alumnus of the KU School of Business. Chandler is CEO, president and director of Fidelity State Bank and Trust Co. of Topeka and vice president and director of First Bank of Newton. He is on the School of Business Board of Advisors and supports numerous other initiatives at KU and the business school.
Previous Chandler lecturers include Alan Mulally, CEO of Ford Motor Co. and KU alumnus; Matthew Rose, CEO of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp.; Michael Powell, former chair of the Federal Communications Commission; and syndicated columnists David Broder and Robert Novak.
