KU students volunteer during Into the Streets Week
LAWRENCE — Students will be seen around Lawrence participating in activities organized by the Center for Community Outreach, the headquarters for volunteers at the University of Kansas, during “Into the Streets Week” April 12-20.
Into the Streets Week is an annual event to raise students’ awareness of issues affecting the KU and Lawrence communities. Activities and programs are designed to promote volunteerism to the students while teaching about local issues such as homelessness, living with disabilities, mentoring and literacy.
Students can choose from an array of activities throughout the week, including:
— April 15, Jubilee Café, First United Methodist Church, 946 Vermont St.
— April 15, CAAS activism fair, Wescoe Beach
— April 16, Wednesdays at Liberty Hall, Liberty Hall, 642 Massachusetts St.
— April 16, Breakfast for Dinner fundraiser, First United Methodist Church
— April 16, Panel on homelessness, First United Methodist Church
— April 17, Student Olympics, Wescoe Beach
— April 17, GROW, New York Elementary School, 936 New York St.
— April 18, Jubilee Café, First United Methodist Church
— April 19, Group service project, Lawrence Community Shelter, 214 W. 10th St.
— April 20, Lawrence half-marathon, Haskell Indian Nations University
By choosing activities that fit their interests, students can find long-term volunteer opportunities that will allow them to make a significant impact on the community.
“Not only is Into the Streets Week a way for students to get to know CCO, but it also allows students to learn more about the community we live in,” said Kelli Stout, a KU senior from Derby and co-director of the Center for Community Outreach. “Sometimes students become detached from the Lawrence community; these events bridge that connection between both the Lawrence and KU communities.”
The University of Kansas is a major comprehensive research and teaching university. University Relations is the central public relations office for KU's Lawrence campus.
