Winners of KU Libraries’ book-collecting contest announced

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas Libraries and Oread Books have announced the winners of the 52nd annual Snyder Book Collecting Contest.

In the undergraduate division, Bailey N. Pike of Lawrence won first place for her collection “The Mythology of Mozart.” Derrais Carter of Kansas City, Kan., placed second with his collection “Black Fire: Art/Leadership/Protest Writings of the 60s/70s.”

In the graduate division, Todd Giles of Dallas, Texas, placed first with “Gertrude Stein: The Making of the Making of a Collection.” Second place went to Rebecca K. Conn of Rhinelander, Wis., for “Queer Life and Culture in England, C.1900-c.1940: A Bibliography of Queer Artists, Authors, Actors and Their Works.” Howard Graham of Cooperstown, N.Y., received honorable mention for his collection: “Growing up in the Home of Baseball.”

The contest, which is open to all KU students, featured $1,100 in prizes from funds generated by the Snyder Book Collecting Contest fund at KU Endowment and gift cards from Oread Books.

Contest judges were Rick Clement, head of special collections at the Spencer Research Library; Jennifer Heller, a KU alumna and winner of the 2004 graduate division of the Snyder contest; and Robert Collmer, distinguished professor emeritus from Baylor University and noted collector of the works of John Bunyan.

Winning collections are on exhibit on Level 2 of the Kansas Union between Oread Books and the KU Bookstore.

Winners are listed below by hometown, level in school, major, parents’ names and previous schools attended.

Todd Raymond Giles, doctoral student in English; bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas.

Derrais Armarne Cart, senior in African and African-American studies and sociology, son of Roy and Sheryl Carter; Washington High School.

NEW YORK

WISCONSIN
