KU engineering professor honored with national award

LAWRENCE — JoAnn Browning, associate professor of civil, environmental and architectural engineering at the University of Kansas, was selected to receive the American Concrete Institute’s Young Member Award for Professional Achievement.

The national award was presented March 30 at the institute’s annual convention in Los Angeles and recognizes the contributions and professional achievements of younger members of the institute. Recipients must be 35 or younger at the time of their nomination.

A letter from Executive Vice President William Tolley says Browning was specifically recognized by the institute’s Board of Direction “for contributions to advancing the quality of concrete constructions through research, development and technology transfer; contributions to the concrete industry through work on ACI technical committees and for the mentoring and supporting of students and student activities.”

Browning is chair of the group’s Simplified Design of Concrete Buildings Committee and a member of five other committees. She also serves on the board of the Kansas chapter. She has been with KU’s School of Engineering since 1998. Her research interests include durability of concrete bridge decks and earthquake performance of reinforced concrete. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from the University of Kentucky and her doctorate from Purdue University. She is a licensed professional engineer in Kansas.

The American Concrete Institute was founded in 1904 and is based in Farmington Hills, Mich. Members of the institute advance concrete knowledge by producing consensus, concrete-related codes, specifications, guides and reports; creating and administering certification programs that support individuals in the concrete industry; delivering seminars and distance learning opportunities; publishing Concrete International magazine; and producing two peer-reviewed technical journals.
