KU pharmacy student group wins $1,000 national leadership award
Sara Rose Haworth
LAWRENCE — University of Kansas pharmacy students won a $1,000 award this spring for a series of seminars they planned for next fall to promote leadership in pharmacy.
The KU Beta Iota chapter of Phi Lambda Sigma won the 2008 Charles Thomas Leadership Challenge Award for its seminar series. The award was presented during the American Pharmacists Association annual meeting last month in San Diego.
Sara Rose Haworth, Salina, a second-year student in KU’s doctor of pharmacy professional degree program, attended the meeting to accept the award. Haworth is coordinator for the KU chapter’s project.
“Our chapter project is titled the KU Pharmacy Leadership Seminar Series,” said Haworth. “It consists of five seminars that will take place during the fall 2008 semester. These seminars are designed to engage new leaders in their pursuit of insight.’
The lecture series will present a variety of topics by some of the field’s foremost leaders. Students will participate in hands-on activities, creating experienced leaders for the profession of pharmacy.
Phi Lambda Sigma Executive Director Mary Euler, Kansas City, Mo., said this was the second time in recent years that the KU chapter had received the award. The KU chapter also won in 1997.
Phi Lambda Sigma honors leadership. Members are selected by their peers. The KU chapter includes about 30 members selected from pharmacy students admitted to the six-year professional doctor of pharmacy, or PharmD, program. PharmD is an undergraduate, professional degree program that requires two years of pre-pharmacy courses and four years of professional program coursework. All pharmacy students are eligible for Phi Lambda Sigma membership and are admitted on recommendation of peer chapter members.
U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Graduate Schools 2008” ranked KU’s PharmD program 16th in the nation. KU’s School of Pharmacy ranks first among the nation’s pharmacy schools with the highest percentage of faculty attaining research funding from the National Institutes of Health and fourth in total funding of research dollars received from the NIH.
