10-piece band to headline annual Jazz in the Park

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas’ student-run radio station, 90.7 KJHK FM, will host its annual Jazz in the Park event from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 4, at Buford M. Watson Jr. Park, located between Sixth and Eighth streets and Kentucky and Tennessee streets. The event is free and open to the public.

Headlining this year is the Chicago Afrobeat Project. Local acts the Yards and Red Lefty also will play.

An afterparty will take place starting at 7 p.m. at the Jazzhaus, 926 1/2 Massachusetts St., with opening act Floyd the Barber, the jazz side project of Split Lip Rayfield’s Eric Mardis, and a second set from the Chicago Afrobeat Project. This is the first year the event has hosted a national act and offered an afterparty. Admission to the afterparty is $5.

“The afternoon concert allows families to spend time together while listening to great music, and the afterparty is a great way to give college students something to do on a Sunday night,” said Elise Stawarz, director of live events for KJHK.

The Chicago Afrobeat Project is a 10-piece band whose style mixes jazz, funk and traditional Afro-Cuban music together with heavy percussion and complex rhythms.
