Center for East Asian Studies to host film screening, panel discussion about Tibet

LAWRENCE — The Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Kansas is sponsoring a film presentation and panel discussion about the history and current political situation in Tibet.

“Olympic Spotlight on Tibet” will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 5, at Woodruff Auditorium in the Kansas Union.

The event will begin with a screening of the documentary film “Tibet: The Cry of the Snow Lion.” Ten years in the making, the film chronicles Tibet’s recent past through personal stories, interviews and a collection of archival images never before assembled in one film.

The film will be followed by a panel discussion aimed at shedding light on the political turmoil in Tibet. Panelists will be Champa Tenzin Lhunpo, a Tibetan Buddhist monk and Tibetan language instructor at KU, and Yang Lu, assistant professor of history. The discussion will be moderated by Eric Rath, associate professor of history.

“Olympic Spotlight on Tibet” follows the Center for East Asian Studies’ two-part symposium titled “Eurasian Security,” which focuses on the changing political landscape of post-Soviet Eurasia and China and is co-sponsored with KU’s Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies. The second part of the symposium will take place at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at the Pine Room in the Kansas Union.
