23 KU students recognized as outgoing members of Freshman Leadership Council

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas Student Involvement and Leadership Center honored 23 students as outgoing members of the Freshman Leadership Council program April 16 in the Kansas Union. Marlesa Roney, vice provost for Student Success, spoke at the event that recognized council members and program coordinators.

Freshman Leadership Council is a 10-week program of leadership enhancement training that allows its participants to meet other student and administrative leaders. The council is limited to 20 or 25 students who were selected on the basis of their application essays, high school leadership experience and academic achievements.

Rueben Perez, director of the center, and three student coordinators chose council members. Student coordinators were Peter Curzon, Phoenix, Ariz., senior in history and finance; and Lindsay Schaefer Groh, Overland Park, and Michelle Smith, Port Arthur, Texas, both master’s degree students in higher education administration.

Among program highlights in this year’s Freshman Leadership Council training:

— Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Richard Lariviere welcomed students to his home, where he recounted personal experiences, spoke about traits of strong leaders and answered student questions.
— Perez discussed opportunities through the Student Involvement and Leadership Center and conducted a diagnostic exercise to help students recognize strengths and weaknesses.
— Mike Harrity, director of student-athlete development, gave a behind-the-scenes look at Kansas Athletics Inc. as well as a tour of Allen Fieldhouse.
— Jennifer Jordan, director of the Business Career Services Center at the School of Business, explained various career services departments at KU and gave participants practical advice for resumes, interviews and obtaining internships and jobs.
