International Awareness Week to take place April 12-19
LAWRENCE — A fashion show, potluck picnic and soccer tournament are just a few of the events taking place during International Awareness Week at the University of Kansas.
The International Student Association is sponsoring the celebration of diversity and culture. Events take place April 12-19 and are free. The public is invited to observe all of the events.
— Saturday, April 12, 9 a.m., Shenk Sports Complex, ISA World Cup Soccer Tournament; teams from different countries will play each other in an eight-on-eight tournament for the championship.
— Monday, April 14, 7:30 p.m., Jayhawk Room, Kansas Union, Open Mic Night; Everyone is welcome to perform comedy or poetry for a $100 gift certificate. The winner also gets to perform at Festival of Nations later in the week.
— Tuesday, April 15, 7 p.m., Woodruff Auditorium, Kansas Union, screening of “Born Into Brothels”; An inspiring, Academy Award-winning film documenting the journey of photographer Zana Briski and the children of prostitutes from Calcutta’s Red Light District. Briski gives the children cameras and teaches them to take pictures, helping them view their world with new eyes and find beauty in unlikely places. (In Bengali with English subtitles.)
— Wednesday, April 16, 5:30 p.m., Lobby, Kansas Union, International Fashion Show; Models will show off traditional clothing from around the world.
— Thursday, April 17, noon-5 p.m. Ballroom, Kansas Union, World Expo; Student cultural groups will have tables to showcase pictures, books and music. Area school children also will attend.
— Friday, April 18, 7 p.m., Woodruff Auditorium, Kansas Union, 56th annual Festival of Nations; International variety show featuring dancing, singing, comedy, speeches and other entertainment from around the world. An after party in the Kansas Union ballroom with Salsa dancing and the music of Son Venezuela will follow the festival.
— Saturday, April 19, noon, Centennial Park, Flavors of the World International Potluck Picnic; Attendees should bring a favorite dish to share with international friends.
