Hawk Week helps students ease into the new school year
LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas is gearing up for the excitement of Hawk Week, which takes place Aug. 17-23.
Hawk Week is an annual event at KU that features information fairs, campus tours, social events and academic tutorials to help new students become familiar with the university before the first day of classes. Each year, nearly 10,000 students participate in Hawk Week activities.
All events are free. A full schedule of events is online at the Hawk Week Web site.
This year, highlights include:
Parent Break Stations
8 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 17, GSP-Corbin, Oliver Hall and Daisy Hill
The KU Parent Association is sponsoring a respite for parents who are helping students move into residence halls. Stop by to take a rest, have a cool drink of water and visit with experienced KU parents.
Traditions Night
8 p.m., Monday, Aug. 18, Memorial Stadium
Join the marching band, students, faculty, staff and the Lawrence community in exploring KU traditions.
Night on the Hill
9 p.m., Monday, Aug. 18, Memorial Campanile
Free concert featuring Ben Kweller.
HAWK Link Block Party
9-11 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 19, Wescoe Beach
Come out to Wescoe Beach to enjoy music and giveaways while learning about HAWK Link, a multicultural retention program at KU.
Roll with Dole
6-7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 20, Dole Institute of Politics
Enjoy free dessert and learn about all that the Dole Institute has to offer. Get your picture taken with a cutout of former Kansas Sen. Robert Dole.
Convocation
7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 20, Lied Center
Convocation is the coming together of all parts of campus — students, faculty and staff — to mark the official beginning of the academic year.
Lied Center Concert and Art Festival
6-8:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 22, Lied Center
Featuring Peter Ostroushko and the Heartland Band. Learn about local organizations and the arts in the Lawrence area.
