Five student groups chosen to perform in upcoming Rock Chalk Revue

LAWRENCE — The advisory board for Rock Chalk Revue, the annual variety show produced by University of Kansas students to benefit Douglas County United Way, has selected five skits for its 60th anniversary show scheduled March 5-7, 2009, at the Lied Center.

The board announced the winners Nov. 24 at a ceremony at Liberty Hall in Lawrence. Winning groups and their skit titles are:

— “Jayhawk Jackpot,” Delta Delta Delta sorority and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity
— “Cast to Sea,” Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and Pi Kappa Phi fraternity
— “Once Upon A Rhyme,” Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and Delta Upsilon fraternity
— “Diamond in the Rough,” Gamma Phi Beta sorority and Phi Delta Theta fraternity
— “Disco Nights,” Sigma Kappa sorority and Theta Chi fraternity

The revue is hailed as one of the largest student-run philanthropies in the United States. Earlier this fall, Douglas County United Way officials recognized Rock Chalk Revue as a 2008 Pacesetter for its nearly 15 percent increase over 2007 in contributed funds. Rock Chalk Revue representatives formally presented a $38,000 check to United Way representatives Oct. 25 during the KU-Texas Tech football game at Memorial Stadium. The record single-year donation was $52,000 in 2003.

In 2007, Rock Chalk Revue’s donation represented 13 percent of KU’s total contribution to United Way. In addition, KU students gave more than 10,000 volunteer hours to Lawrence and Douglas County community organizations affiliated with the United Way.

“Rock Chalk Revue has become a staple of tradition at the University of Kansas,” said Executive Producer Kevin Campbell, a senior from Leawood. “To celebrate the 60th anniversary in style, we have raised the bar in all aspects of the show, specifically the expectation of increasing our donation to the United Way of Douglas County from $38,000 to $60,000.”

Newly established by Student Success this year, the Ann Eversole Rock Chalk Revue Fund, coordinated by KU Endowment, recognizes the 20-plus years Eversole has been Rock Chalk Revue adviser. She is assistant vice provost for Student Success and plans to retire in 2009. Contributions to the fund, intended to offset the show’s production costs to increase United Way donations, are tax-deductible. For more information, go to www.vpss.ku.edu/Giving/rcr.shtml.

KU students write and produce the musical revue as well as fill leadership and fundraising roles and select a theme. The Rock Chalk Revue advisory board chose “In the Nick of Time” as the 2009 show’s theme. Groups interested in performing in Rock Chalk Revue create scripts to interpret that theme, then submit synopsis notebooks and perform a five-to-seven-minute preview to a panel of judges. Judges selected five shows from 11 entries by fraternity and sorority organizations. More information about Rock Chalk Revue is online at groups.ku.edu/~rcr/.

The Rock Chalk Revue advisory board is comprised of 20 students and four advisers. Heading the advising team is Rueben Perez, director of the Student Involvement and Leadership Center. Business adviser is Ruth Stoner, budget and personnel administrator for Student Success. David Johnston, marketing director for the KU Alumni Association, is marketing adviser. Stefani Gerson, student programs coordinator for the KU Alumni Association, is programming adviser.
