Media advisory: KU to host symposium on aging and the brain

LAWRENCE — What can we do to preserve our mental abilities as we age? Are there routines, exercises or habits that can help those who are typically aging as well as those with dementia?

Separate the facts from fiction and fads with research and clinical scientists from the University of Kansas’ Gerontology Center and the KU Medical Center’s Landon Center on Aging and Alzheimer and Memory Program.

WHAT: The Aging Brain — Use It or Lose It? A KU Life Span Institute Community Conversation. The event is free and open to the public. No registration required.

WHEN: 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 23

Susan Kemper, the Roy A. Roberts Distinguished Professor of Psychology and senior scientist at the Life Span Institute’s Gerontology Center

David Johnson, assistant professor of clinical psychology and assistant scientist at the Gerontology Center

Joan McDowd, associate director of research at the Landon Center on Aging and professor of occupational therapy education

Dr. Jeffrey M. Burns, director of the KU Alzheimer and Memory Program

Moderator: David J. Ekerdt, director of the Gerontology Center and professor of sociology
