Teaching about Asia seminar in Andale offers $1,000 in benefits

LAWRENCE — Kansas K-12 teachers have an opportunity this spring to receive $1,000 in benefits to them and to their schools through a seminar at Andale sponsored by the Kansas Consortium for Teaching about Asia at the University of Kansas.

Funded by the Freeman Foundation of New York and Stowe, Vt., the seminar is free to participants and will meet on three Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m. and all-day Saturdays on April 4 and 5, April 18 and 19, and May 2 and 3. The seminar will be conducted in Andale High School, 700 Rush.

Teachers can earn two graduate credits at KU and receive books about China, Korea and Japan valued at $200 for personal use and educational materials for their school libraries valued at $300. In addition, participants receive $250 stipends for attending the seminar and submitting three lesson plans and another $250 for implementing their lesson plans.

The seminar is designed to enhance teaching about China, Korea and Japan in Kansas classrooms. Instruction includes lectures, discussions and multimedia presentations on the geography, history, philosophy, art and literature from ancient to contemporary times in China, Korea and Japan.

Teachers from grades five through 12 of world history, geography, literature, art or the gifted and school librarians from public and private schools are eligible but all teachers are encouraged to apply.

Applications are available online or by contacting Randi Hacker, educational outreach coordinator for KU’s Center for East Asian Studies, by calling (785) 864-3832.
