KU officials issue statements re: Mackey investigation
LAWRENCE – University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway and Dean of the School of Law Gail Agrawal released the following statements regarding the arrest and apparent suicide of the individual police suspected in the killing of law student Jana Mackey.
Hemenway: “The resolution of this tragedy leaves us all stunned. I hope that everyone will remain considerate of the needs of the family and friends of Jana Mackey during this terrible time. I thank the Lawrence Police Department as well as other authorities for their efforts in the investigation.”
Agrawal: "The Law School is grief-stricken over the loss of Jana. While we are shocked at recent developments in the investigation, we remain focused on doing all we can to support her family and friends through this terrible time. We are making every effort to inform our students, faculty and staff of available counseling and emotional support. Jana was strongly committed to social justice, and in her memory, we hope to inspire others to share her cause."
According to a media release issued earlier today by the Lawrence Police Department, an arrest warrant was issued for Adolfo Garcia-Nunez on July 4. The warrant alleged charges of second-degree murder in the death of Mackey. Garcia-Nunez was located and arrested in Elizabeth, N.J. Lawrence police were notified today that Garcia-Nunez took his own life while in custody.
