Two engineering students receive national honor society scholarships

LAWRENCE — Two seniors in the University of Kansas School of Engineering have been named Tau Beta Pi Scholars and each will receive $2,000 scholarships.

Emily Julianna Arnold, an aerospace engineering major from Hillsboro, and Emily Melea Reimer, an architectural engineering from Wichita, are among the 145 students nationwide to receive the Tau Beta Phi honor for 2008-09. Arnold is one of only seven aerospace students selected nationally, and Reimer is one of only four architectural engineering students chosen.

Tau Beta Pi Scholars are selected for high levels of scholarship, campus leadership and service, and promise of future contributions to the engineering profession. All scholars are members of Tau Beta Pi, the world’s largest engineering honor society.

Arnold currently is assisting with the construction of the Meridian UAV, an uncrewed aerial vehicle designed to carry important data collecting equipment in polar regions, at KU’s Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets, a science and technology center established by the National Science Foundation. She is the daughter of Don and Gayla Ratzlaff of Hillsboro and a Hillsboro High School graduate.

Reimer is a KU ambassador with the School of Engineering and a track and field athlete. She is the daughter of Jill Lokke of Wichita and a graduate of Wichita’s Northeast Magnet School.

Tau Beta Pi was founded in 1885 and has 234 collegiate chapters in the United States and active alumni chapters in 18 cities. It has initiated nearly 500,000 members in its history. Students must be in the top eighth of the junior class or the top fifth of the senior class to be eligible for membership.
