Experienced financial professional named director of Internal Audit at KU
LAWRENCE — Certified public accountant Don Holland has been named director of Internal Audit at the University of Kansas. He succeeds Dennis Moss, who is retiring after nearly 24 years of service to the university.
Holland comes to KU from Indiana University, where he spent the past seven years as audit manager. During that time he also taught as an adjunct faculty member at Bethel College in Mishawaka, Ind. In the private sector, he has held positions such as chief financial officer and vice president of finance. Holland has a bachelor’s degree in accountancy and political science from Purdue University and is a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors.
Holland has been at KU since early May, working with Moss to become familiar with the university. He will assume the director’s role June 9.
“I am excited about the KU position and the opportunity to contribute to this great institution,” Holland said. “I am eager to serve the chancellor and work with the staff to move the effective audit department Dennis Moss has built to the next level. In the short time Dennis and I have spent together I have come to recognize him as a colleague and an accomplished audit professional. Dennis will be missed not only by KU, but by the accounting profession as well.”
Internal Audit conducts reviews of activity throughout the university. Audits generally review compliance with university objectives, Kansas Board of Regents policy and federal and state requirements as well as financial efficiency and effectiveness. The director reports to the chancellor and is responsible for audit at all KU locations.
Moss came to KU in 1984 as Internal Audit supervisor for the Lawrence campus. In addition to supervising audits throughout his career, he has assisted general counsel in handling tax issues related to the university and was instrumental in the creation of a university tax analyst position. Moss also helped establish KU’s manager orientation program and hosted two audit conferences for the Big 8/Big 12 institution internal auditors. Under his guidance, the office has also developed self-assessment guides for KU offices regarding handling of cash, purchasing and disbursements and property control.
“I will miss many of the people that I have dealt with at the university over the years,” Moss said. “KU has good and dedicated administrators and staff at all levels.”
Theresa Gordzica, chief financial officer at KU, said she is confident the transition will go smoothly.
“I wish Dennis well in his retirement,” Gordzica said. “His advice and wisdom will certainly be missed. Dennis has had a positive impact on a broad spectrum of financial issues at KU. I appreciate his contributions to the university, and I know Don Holland will continue the outstanding work at Internal Audit.”
The University of Kansas is a major comprehensive research and teaching university. University Relations is the central public relations office for KU's Lawrence campus.
