WHEN: Monday, March 17

WHAT: Seven “oversize load” trucks with pilot vehicles will haul a prefabricated, environmentally sustainable arts center 414 miles across Kansas — from Lawrence to Greensburg.

Over one day, the convoy will pass at least 34 Kansas communities in 15 counties: Allen, Anderson, Barber, Cowley, Douglas, Elk, Franklin, Greenwood, Harper, Kiowa, Miami, Pratt, Sumner, Wilson and Woodson.

WHO: Studio 804, the design/build program for graduate students at the University of Kansas School of Architecture and Urban Planning.

WHERE: Following a course plotted by the Kansas Department of Transportation to assure adequate clearance at bridges and overpasses, the convoy will depart Lawrence at 7 a.m. and take the following route:

South on U.S. Highway 59
East on U.S. Highway 56 (passing Baldwin City)
South on Kansas Highway 33 (passing Wellsville)
East on Kansas Highway 68
South on U.S. Highway 169 (passing Paola, Osawatomie, Greeley, Garnett, Welda, Colony and Iola)
West on U.S. Highway 54 (passing Piqua, Athens and Yates Center)
South on U.S. Highway 75 (passing Buffalo)
West on Kansas Highway 39 (passing Roper)
West on U.S. Highway 400
South on U.S. Highway 99 (passing Severy and Howard)
West on U.S. Highway 160 (passing Moline, Cambridge, Burden, Tisdale, Winfield, Oxford, Wellington, Harper, Attica, Sharon and Medicine Lodge)
North on U.S. Highway 281 (passing Sawyer and Pratt)
West on U.S. Highway 54 (passing Cullison, Wellsford, Haviland and Brenham)

Upon arrival in Greensburg, the students of Studio 804 will assemble the seven modules upon a foundation. Finishing work will take place on site throughout late March, April and early May.

“It’s been rewarding to see the building take shape over the last few weeks and see our work from the beginning of the semester come to life,” said Jenny Kivett, a Studio 804 student from Victoria. “There is still a tremendous amount of work to be done, and we are at the point where we are excited to move to the next step in the process and see the project through to completion.”

When completed, the 1,600-square-foot arts center will feature solar panels, wind turbines, geothermal heating, thermal massing and other Earth-friendly systems. Studio 804 expects the structure to attain the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification, the nation’s most rigorous standard for environmental sustainability.

An open house for the new arts center is planned for May 4, the one–year anniversary of the tornado that devastated Greensburg.
